Germany has always held a special place in the history of metal, and when it comes to thrash, its legacy speaks for itself. Some of the most influential bands in the genre came from there, helping shape the sound and attitude we still associate with old-school thrash today. So, when another German band returns with its second full-length, you can understand why my expectations are naturally high.
Taskforce Toxicator returns with “Countdown To Death”, three years after their debut “Laser Samurai”, and from the very first minutes it becomes clear that we are dealing with a band that knows exactly what it wants to do!
The Germans clearly honor old-school thrash metal and everything that made the genre so addictive in the first place: sharp riffs, speed, intensity, explosive screams and that constant invitation to headbanging. At the same time, Taskforce Toxicator manage to leave their own mark on their work and, thankfully, this is not one more nostalgic trip through our beloved world of thrash metal.
Deliciously punchy and direct riffs, built to hit exactly where they should without trying to impress with unnecessary “magic-tricks”. Guitarist Dominik Rothe mentioned that this time the band paid particular attention to removing anything considered unnecessary from the compositions. And after listening to the album, I can definitely say that this approach is obvious: every song feels completely… to the point!
Each track seems to have exactly what it needs and nothing more. There are no unnecessary “extras”, no moments that feel like they are there simply to stretch out the duration of a song. The tracks arrive, cause absolute chaos and move on, exactly the way a thrash release that respects itself should be!
A huge part of the album’s personality also comes from Fabian Koch’s vocals, which I personally loved. Aggressive and full of energy, they fit the character of the songs perfectly, while special mention has to go to his high-pitched screams, appearing at just the right moments and sounding almost like a call to war!
And that Tom Araya-like scream on “Rebellion Strikes Back”? My respects. What the hell did you do there, man? Absolutely brilliant!
Another major strength of “Countdown To Death” is its production. The sound is crystal clear! It is a modern production that highlights every detail without, in my opinion, sterilizing the band’s old-school DNA.
Taskforce Toxicator genuinely sound like they are having a great time doing what they do and that enthusiasm translates directly into an incredible amount of energy for the listener. It immediately makes you imagine just how enjoyable one of their live shows should be!
And somewhere here perhaps lies the biggest compliment I can make for “Countdown To Death”:
It made me wish I was not listening to it through my speakers, but experiencing it live at a concert!
Taskforce Toxicator are not trying to reinvent thrash metal. Then again, nobody asked them to. What “Countdown To Death” offers instead is, above all, one hell of an enjoyable thrash metal release from a band full of confidence and hunger!
Get ready for endless headbanging…
