Hailing from Italy, black metallers DUIR return with their second full-length release.
This time, the band comes to deliver, in its own distinctive way, a heavy feeling of endless battle and pain. Catarsi takes us deep into the trenches of World War I and follows the journey of a young fighter, however here there is no room for glorious heroism and grand words.
Because when we talk about war, we are not talking about epic moments and romanticized acts of bravery. We are talking about moments filled with fear, mud, loss, silence and the final catharsis that can only come after the completion of a violent and bloody cycle.
DUIR offer us a masterful work of atmospheric black metal, where the folk influences are not simply added as an “extra touch”,but become part of the album’s very soul. On Catarsi, nothing feels random. The riffs carry melancholy and aggresiveness, the traditional instruments give a ritualistic character, while the blackened vocals express the pain and agony of a man trapped inside the violent, bloody cycle of war!
Personally, I believe we are dealing with a truly complete album, one that offers plenty of emotion to those who love extreme metal, especially when someone looks beyond pure aggression and searches for feeling behind the darkness.
What makes Catarsi grow stronger, at least to my ears, after every listen, is the way it builds its atmosphere. DUIR do not rush; they allow each track to cast its own shadow over the story, giving us the space to step inside it ourselves, following step by step the path of the tormented fighter.
Catarsi is a heavy, atmospheric, and deeply emotional album. DUIR offer a work that demands time and attention; and if you give it, it rewards you with a world full of intensity and pain, leading you to the final catharsis.
Another must-listen of 2026 for the extreme metal scene. Congratulations DUIR! Thank you for this unique experience, and hoping for even greater things to come!
