Cover songs are usually a very nice treat for the fans of a band that releases them, especially when it’s a full cover album! For Six Feet Under, it has actually become a bit of a tradition to do so. Apart from their regular work of death metal, Six Feet Under has a series of cover albums known as “The Graveyard Classics“. Sometimes they follow a standard theme, or sometimes a selection of songs from the masters of a heavy metal. It’s been six years since the last Graveyard Classics release and this time have become special. The fourth instalment of their series is paying tribute to two of metal’s most heralded legends: IRON MAIDEN and JUDAS PRIEST. Titled “The Number Of The Priest” and mixed by Jesse Kirkbride at Kirkbride Recordings in Cape Coral, Florida.
The album is comprised of five Judas Priest covers and six Iron Maiden covers, handpicked by Metal Blade Records. As founder of Six Feet Under, Chris Barnes comments: “Get ready to have your ears violated and your mind blown!” and he is right. All these songs are done up in true Six Feet Under style. They are all played with downtrend and distorted guitars, heavy drums and Chris Barnes’ iconic death metal gutturals on vocals. These songs definitely feel more brutal and heavier than the originals, given the guitars.
However, given that Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson are two of the best voices in heavy metal, and their vocal melodies are incredibly memorable, hearing replacing them with Barnes’ growls is a little jarring but not in a good way. I think that Iron Maiden and Judas Priest diehard fans might have issues, but when you’re able to look at music and pay attention to the riffage, these are still awesome treatments of classic metal songs.
